Types of Oral Surgery
- Tooth extractions. There are numerous situations in which your dentist may recommend removing a tooth from your mouth. If a tooth has been badly damaged by decay, is crowding your other teeth, or has become infected, it may be best to extract it. If a tooth needs to be removed, however, your dentist will recommend an option for replacing it in order to ensure that you don’t suffer any health complications from having a missing tooth.
- Dental implants. When you are missing a tooth, one method of replacing it is a dental implant. An implant is an artificial replacement tooth with a root that is surgically placed in your jaw. Once the implant is fixed in place, it essentially looks and functions like any of your natural teeth. Dental implants are a safe and proven procedure, and they will not become loose or unstable.
- Wisdom tooth removal. If your wisdom teeth are impacted, we may recommend having them removed. In many instances, impacted wisdom teeth can lead to chronic inflammation, jaw problems, damage to the surrounding teeth, and other complications. While many people fear the idea of having their wisdom teeth removed, the procedure is safe and non-traumatic.
- Biopsies. When you visit our office for a routine checkup and cleaning, your dentist will perform an oral cancer screening. If your dentist finds any unusual lumps or other abnormalities, we may do a biopsy—removing a small piece of tissue—in order to analyze it. This will enable your dentist to determine whether or not the abnormality is caused by oral cancer.
